Introduction: Gorgeous Speed-Yellow paint highlights this excellent die-cast from UT. One of my favorite models, I picked this up (along with a red UT Porsche RS!) at a tiny hobby shop while visiting The Cotswolds, north of London, in Bourton-on-the-Water. So it also has some sentimental value to me.
Highs: UT models aren't the best available, or the most expensive. And I consider many of their models below my collecting standards. But their Porsches are an exception. If you want to collect the 993 series, UT makes some beauties. This model, the GT2 Street version, definitely fits that category. As I mentioned above, the paint quality is beautiful, with no blemishes or imperfections. That's saying alot considering the price point. The real highlights on this model are the 2-tone rims, which feature chrome outer rings and gun-metal inner spokes. Behind the rims can be seen matching gun-metal brake calipers. And mounted on these rims are fat, low-profile high performance tires with detailed tread pattern. The interior is also something to see, with 2-tone black and white seats, and the carbon-fiber look on the door handles and gear-shift knob. Doors fit tight, with good resistance to hold them in place.
Lows: Interior is not carpeted, rear engine cover is plastic and is a little loose (though it does sit perfectly against the rear of the car), front hood does not stay up on its own. Actually, front hood sits loosely at the front of the car. If you look at the frontal photo below, you can see that there are uneven gaps between the hood edges and fenders. But frankly, if you let any of these dissuade you from adding this model to your collection, you're missing the boat entirely. Remember, these can be had for $25, so while it may not be GMP quality, it's far above the usual quality level available in the $25 range.
Summary: I'm a big fan of UT's Porsche 993 models, because of cars like this GT2. Excellent value, lots of detail, and they just look right. Plus they're made well, and are heavy. So if you want to pick it up and handle it you won't feel like you're going to break anything. They're not easy to find, but if you can get your hands on one it will only make your collection better.
