Review: UT Porsche 993 Cabriolet Black

 

 

 

 

Highs: Thick, glossy, smooth paint. Nice wheels and brake calipers, with "Porsche" on the calipers. Carpeted interior. Looks great in any collection, as UT makes some great 993 models, perfectly capturing the aggressive stance and proportions.

Lows: Interior detail not up to level of Autoart and Kyosho...stick shift, for example, looks cheap, steering wheel not as realistic as I'd like. Also mounting posts are visible in front lower lights. Side lights are just orange painted bumps. Front cargo compartment opens, but lid won't stay up on its own.

Summary: Maybe I'm an apologist for UT, but I have no trouble looking past the above-mentioned "lows". And that's because, if you want to have 993s in your collection, UTs are really your best bet and are damned good considering the price point. Regardless of the sometimes-plasticky interior, and the lack of finer detail, UT does something that even some of the more expensive manufacturers don't always do with other models: they perfectly replicate the "look" of the 993. The low-profile tires, and muscular stance, and aggressive appearance, and thick glossy paint. See that spacing between the tires and the fenders? That's how the real car looks. You can spend $100+ on CMC's Mercedes 450SL Coupe, but owners of that car will tell you that the front end sits too high. So, yes, there's something to be said for capturing the look and stance of the car....it's an excellent place to start when making a 1/18 diecast.

The black Cabriolet is one of three colors UT made of this car, Silver and Burgundy being the other 2. The Silver is easy to find, online and on ebay, usually for under $25. Burgundy also easy, but not as easy as the Silver. Black is the rarest of the 3, so you may have to hunt a while for this particular color. But even then, when they do show up on ebay they can usually be had for under $30. At that price, don't hesitate.
