Review: UT Porsche 996 Coupe Black

Introduction: Believe it or not, this car actually made my Top-12 ranking. Not because it's as nice as my GMP, or Lane, or CMC models, but because I really feel this is the sleeper diecast of them all. These cars can be found on ebay in plentiful quantity for $15-20. Think about that....that's less money than you'll pay for many Maisto or Bburago. Heck, you can pay that for some Anson or Welly models. But, in my opinion, UT's black Porsche 996 is world's nicer than anything from any of those companies. Here's why it's my all-time sleeper, and a great model by many standards...

Highs: Smooth, rich black metallic paint, over beige interior. Car comes with felt-feel carpeting, not just on the floor but also on the interior door panels. Even the front cargo compartment under the hood is carpeted. Interior very nicely done, with black accents in all the right places such as speaker covers, electrtic-seat switches and center console. Low-profile high performance tires sit on Porsche's Turbo-look aluminum rims, with black "Porsche" inscribed brake calipers. Exhaust pipes have that accurate aluminum appearance to them, not the fake-chrome look of many more expensive models. Engine done in 4 colors, and car can be displayed with the engine cover up because it will stay up on its own. Most importantly, car sits exactly as it should...stance is aggressive, and screams Porsche. And if you think that's no big deal, take a look at Autoart's new 996 models, with their inaccurately angled front end underside.

Lows: Side signal markers are painted on, and front hood does not stay up on its own. Stickshift a separate, glued-on piece of plastic that looks hokey. But come on....for under $20 how can you complain?

Summary: As I write this, there's an auction on ebay for this same exact diecast, for $16.99. That's just nuts. I understand supply and demand, but I bet there are many collectors who spend lots more money on diecasts that aren't nearly as nice as this, and they don't even know it. After all, it's not as if the subject matter is odd....it's not a Yugo model, it's a black 996 Porsche Coupe! I'll say it again, given the price point at which these sell, it's the sleeper diecast of them all.
