Review: GMP Accessory: Buick 2-Post Lift

Highs: This accessory car lift is part of GMP's Buick Grand National series. I bought it just as a creative way to display my cars, though I no longer own the Buick GNX which used to grace my collection. Here's what I like about the lift: every couple of days I pull a car out of my display case, and it's kind of my "car of the week". The lift is a nice way to display the car, better than simply sitting it on a desk. The oil catch bucket and pan are heavy and well detailed. I also like the color scheme of the lift, very bright and it stands out wherever you put it. Raising the lift arms is easy using the supplied crank tool.

Lows: The lift arms are well-enough made, and I know they're not going to break, but they flex just enough to make me just a little nervous sometimes. They also swing freely...a little too freely. I'd like it better if they stayed in place more tightly. It's not that they come out from under the car, but when placing a car on them you have to actually coordinate getting all of them in the right position, and once you do it's very easy to knock them out of position before you get the car comfortably on all 4 arms. Just a tiny nudge on any of them and it swings back out of position. Sounds dumb, I know, but getting all the arms where they're supposed to be is easier said than done, for me at least! Lastly, the screws that hold the posts in place are small. I don't expect the posts to break free off the base, but longer screws would fix the posts more solidly to the base.

Summary: At the $45 I paid, this item is overpriced. At $30, I would buy it again. It's nice, it's colorful, and it makes a nice display base but there are too many things about it that bug me. If you're looking for a nice way to display your "car of the week", try to pick one up at a bargain price or on sale. Even better might be to take a look at GMP's new 4-post lift, something I'll be looking at pretty soon myself.
